Solution to New York Times cryptic crossword: 1/19/2014


  1. I got both ellipses and Edith Wharton but don't see the logic that makes them right.
    Any help?

  2. <E(LLIPS)<ES <SEE ("look") containing ("around") SPILL ("coastline disaster", as in an oil spill), reversal indicated by "in retrospect"

  3. ED I THW(H)ART ON ED ("editor") + I (†) + THWART ("impede") containing ("has") H ("hit") + ON (†)
