I've known rivers (Puzzle No. 3242)

This week's puzzle manages to work at least one river into each clue.

Link to Puzzle:  http://www.thenation.com/article/168116/puzzle-no-3242

Hozom's Comment: "The Chicken and the Egg."  I wonder if Hot and Trazom had a burgeoning file of river clues somewhere...

Themework: 100%(!)  Always easier when you're theming in the clues.

Difficulty (by standards of this weekly puzzle):  Easy

Political content: None this week

solution and comments below the fold

Legend: "*" anagram; "~" sounds like; "<" letters reversed; "( )" letters inserted; "_" letters deleted; "†" explicit in the clue

Across
1a
WA | R | RIO | R
WA (Washington) + R (restricted) + RIO + ("river" in Spanish [South America]) + R (right).
5a
F | INCHES
F (first letter of "fox") + INCHES (moves slowly).
9a
*EX (PO) S
EXS (anagram [perverse] of "sex") containing (on banks of) PO.
10a
LEMON | DROP
LEMON (yellow) + DROP (duck).  Favoring an elegant clue (yellow duck) over a precise definition (drop =? duck)
11a
PUN | K | ROCK
PUN (wordplay) + K (king) + _Rock_ HUDSON.  Nice assemblage.
12a
*BE (S) TIR
*TIBER containing (winding around) S (initial of "sleeper").  A single indicator calls out both the container and the anagram.
14a
S | <ODA<
S_chuylkill_ + ODA (reversal [returning] of ADO "trouble")
15a
TE (L) E  | *SCOPE
TEE (peg) containing (takes) L (left) + *PECOS
17a
*NIE(*LS BO)HR
*LOBS (anagram indicated by "bombs") contained in (in) *RHINE (anagram indicated by "rolling")
19a
NE (A) T
NET (seine) containing (engulfs) A
22a
GO (AW) A | Y
GOA (state in southwest India) containing (within) "AW, _shucks_" + Y_angtze.  Goa was once a Portuguese colony, influencing the cuisine, which features the fresh fish of the nearby sea.
23a
A | SWAN | DAM
A + SWAN (waterfowl) + DAM (female).  The Aswan High Dam, constructed in the 1960s, changed Egypt forever by ending the annual floods of the Nile.
26a
*GALVESTON
Anagram of (eddying) "Volga sent."  Galveston is a city in Texas, at the Gulf of Mexico end of the Houston Ship Channel
27a
ST (A) TE
ST TE (St. Lawrence) containing (encircling) A
28a
E | URA | <SI< | A
[!--"Where Ural largely exists"] URA_l_ + SI (reversal [toward the west] of IS [exists]) contained in E_ngland_ + C_hina_.  Rebus, container, and reversal: nice clue.
29a
COW | *PEA | S
COW (buffalo, as in "intimidate" + *APE (anagram indicated by "chewed") + S_hannon_

Down
1d
W | HELP
W_abash_ + HELP (aid). Johnny Cash: Wabash Cannonball (in honor of my mother, a Hoosier)
2d
*RIPENED
Anagram of (twisted) "DNIEPER"
3d
*INSER | T
Anagram of (fermented) "RESIN" + T_igris_
4d
*RELOCATION
Anagram (wild) of "CAT ON LOIRE."  Some may gripe about the indicator not being separated from the anagram, but I think it's clever and edgy.  This isn't a beginner's cryptic.
5d
oF A Mekong
Indicated by "bridge"
6d
NO (*NSEN) SE
NOSE (snoop) containing (around) anagram (in flux) of Enns.  That's a stretch, but the Enns is an Austrian tributary of the Danube.
7d
HO | RATIO
I'll call this an "inverted clue" "Ho" is two tenths (a ratio) of "Housatonic."  Elegant.
8d
*SUPERHEAT
Anagram indicated by "nuked"
13d
*ULTRASONIC
Anagram indicated by "deprogrammed"
14d
*SYNAGOGUE
Anagram indicated by "revisited"
16d
E | <SCAP | EES<
Reversal ("on the rise") of SEE (watch) + PACS (campaign groups) preceded by ("supporting") delawarE.  Does Trazom or Hot have a Philadelphia connection?  We get both Schuylkill and Delaware in the clues.
18d
<E-TA (I) LER<
Reversal ("getting up") of RELATE (tell) containing (about) I (the first)
20d
*ENDGAME
Anagram indicated by "Mystic"
21d
WAR | SAW
WAR (fighting) + SAW (gnome).  Didn't know that second definition of "gnome"
24d
M (fEET) S
MS (abbreviation for Mississippi [MI is Michigan]) containing (keeping) _f_EET.
25d
<ETTAlp<
Container and reversal both indicated by "backtracking through."  What would constructors do without an Etta James soundtrack?
